FERN â Offline
âTell me honestly, Jon. Am I looking fat?â Fern strode into the bedroom, balancing a bowl of crisps on her laptop.
âTruthfully, Fern, I canât tell. Not when you have so many clothes on.â
âIâm only in a T-shirt and underwear,â said Fern, placing the laptop on the bed and handing the crisp bowl to Jon.
âAs I said, too many clothes. Let me just take a look under your T-shirt.â Jon grabbed Fern, but she nimbly wriggled out of his grasp.
âNo, not now, Iâm serious. Phineas in the script department told me I was looking âhealthyâ â and you know what that means.â
âEr, that youâre looking healthy? Oh, hold on a minute, you mean healthy, like healthy?â
âI donât mean healthy at all, Iâm just telling you what Phineas said.â
âOK. T-shirt off, side profile, let me get a proper look.â Jon sat up straight on the bed. âAre you feeling bloated?â
âIâm not taking my T-shirt off. Iâve got a budget to do by tomorrow morning. I just want to know.â Fern sat on the bed beside Jon and opened her computer.
âOK, soooo, let me see.â Jon jumped onto his knees like an overexcited spaniel and eyed up his wife. âLooking at you when youâre clearly overdressed and refusing to present yourself in the correct manner, my answer is no. You do not look fat. You look exactly the same as you looked last week. If you let me feel you, howeverâ¦â Jon dared to run his hand over Fernâs solid abdomen.
ââ¦So, no indication of me looking pregnant?â
âOhhh, so, thatâs what youâre asking, is it?â said Jon, sitting back and eyeing Fern up. âYou want to know if you look pregnant, so you introduce this fictitious weirdo called Phineas, and make out he is asking very personal questions in order to avoid asking them yourself. You know, Fern⦠you really are a total nutcase who needs to learn to open up about your true feelings.â
âPhineas does exist.â
âAha. In your head?â
âNo, in the script department, as I said. He collects Star Wars paraphernalia and dresses up manga-style for Comic Con.â
âAnd asks you overly forward questions?â
âOK, OK. Fine. I just didnât want to ask outright becauseâ¦â
âBecause youâre paranoid about looking like you care?â
âNo.â
âWhat then?â
âI just donât. I mean, I canât, itâs just thatââ
âLook, Fern,â said Jon, removing the computer from Fernâs lap. âLove of my life. This has been brewing for a while and itâs OK, I get it. I understand. You donât need to do this.â
âBut I do.â
âYou donât. You forget, I know you almost as well as you know yourself and regardless of what you think, you are the most capable person.â
âWhat if Iâm not? What if the reason I canât get pregnant is because Iâm somehow damaged? Not fit to be a mother. Itâs all instinctive you know.â
âFern, what happened, happened years ago.â
âShe was still my mother.â
âNo, Sadie was your mother.â
âSadie is my aunt⦠big difference!â
âBut she loved you like a mother. Lookâ¦â Jon cupped Fernâs small, determined face in his large, gentle hands.
